@apzpins@some.apz.fi I mean all bets on common functionality may be discarded when the dang thing has an LED down the well.
Now that I think of it, though, it is actually not unique to Apple... didn't some Sony Minidisc devices offer this same round 1/8" TOSLink? I seem to vividly remember it, but I can't recall if the jacks for it were dedicated or shared with copper

@vxo@digipres.club They did, it's not unique to Apple, just one of the rare laptops to have it. I think I've seen a MSI laptop with one too. Thinkpads also had SPDIF, but the copper version and (always?) in the dock.
