It's great to burn the effigy of a tech billionaire at #EMFCamp in protest of the exploitation of people, labour and natural resources in the pursuit of endless growth. It's great to highlight that many EMF attendees are bright, curious, creative, and hardworking. But we're not unique in this. There are people out there fighting against fascism, fighting against exploitation, fighting against racism. People who can't afford a ticket to EMF. People who aren't (by and large) middle class, white, cis, predominately male. The invitation to join a cliquey bureaucratic trade union is all well and good. But go find the people out there who are already fighting the fight. Find the anarchists, the antifascists. Get involved with what they're doing. And listen to them and learn from them. There's places for us nerds to get involved in this fight. But let's not reinvent the wheels that have been turning since the Luddites and Cable Street - let's reinforce them and improve them!
