@zazzoo@mstdn.ca as the kids say "No lies were spoken" It's frightening to me and a lot of my country-cohorts here too. Not nearly enough of them and I don't know how or if we will get over this without total collapse that takes millions down with us.

@kevbob@xoxo.zone What I'm genuinely afraid of is, personal relationships aside, that what Trump has done is smash off the last remains of a cracked smiling mask many of us have worn for the last century. It's not just new problems, but dredging up past grievances. Here's an anecdote: When I was a kid in the early 1980s (maybe 12-13 years old), I spent a lot of time drawing comics. I'd do them as one-offs and show them around to friends and school mates. Sophomoric stuff drawn by a kid. One story series that seemed really popular was one where the US invaded Canada; a resource dispute caused by a nationalization effort. The story was inspired Pierre Trudeau's National Energy Program but followed a fictional socialist prime minister as they came to power and learned the job involved getting daily orders from the US embassy - and decided to ignore them. There were many pages of my home city, Ottawa, being bombed. To understand, I think USians need to put themselves in a frame of mind where that would resonate.
