@kevbob@xoxo.zone I appreciate Jamelle's words, but even this is an understatement, truly, of the outrage we feel and the reasons why. One thing he missed is the power imbalance here - that neighbour waving a shotgun in our face is far more heavily armed than us and has glorified war deep into its culture. In the US, everything is a war on something, every sporting event is war. It's just war, war, war all the time. The US is in a constant state of war, both literally and metaphorically. This is a major cultural difference and a major foreign policy difference. The US is, frankly, frightening to us. Another thing: Something called Manifest Destiny. A belief in a divine right, handed down by God Himself, for the US to own the entire continent - they say. You don't hear that phrase, but it's clearly what's driving Trump. Another thing: They've tried before. Not just Venezuela or Iran or Cuba. The War of 1812. Trump clearly and openly talks about how he is unhappy with how that turned out.
