@smn@l3ib.org @Viss@mastodon.social Not quite. You could fake a device ID, and get the OS to download a different driver, where the payload would exist. But it has oversight, so would be unlikely. It's not executing code from an EDID chip, only providing ID data. But could you embed an EDID chip in a cable, to report one different from the display? Yes. I have a DP to VGA adapter that does this, while converting DP signals into VGA.

    @smn@l3ib.org @Viss@mastodon.social The basic chain for Displays - You connect the display, the OS reads the EDID. If the system doesn't have a driver for that EDID, it'll look in it's database of available drivers for one. If it finds one in the MS database, it'll download it and install it automatically. If it's not in the database,you'll probably get a yellow triangle, until you manually install a driver for the device. That's the basic OS chain. And to get in MS's database - ever heard of signed drivers?
