The basic chain for Displays -
You connect the display, the OS reads the EDID.
If the system doesn't have a driver for that EDID, it'll look in it's database of available drivers for one. If it finds one in the MS database, it'll download it and install it automatically.
If it's not in the database,you'll probably get a yellow triangle, until you manually install a driver for the device.
That's the basic OS chain.
And to get in MS's database - ever heard of signed drivers?

@latelesley@mastodon.scot @smn@l3ib.org @Viss@mastodon.social You won't get a yellow triangle for a monitor without driver – it'll just use the Generic PnP Monitor driver (which just trusts the data provided by EDID for supported resolutions).
