Connecting things can be fun! But when they don't line up exactly (again: massive shared setting and characters built up over multiple generations of writers, artists, actors, special effects, etc), that shouldn't get in the way of what might be fun about the story itself.

What bothers me most these days are changes that miss the point, without showing that they're deliberately exploring a new take. To pick an example from my avatar, I have a lot less trouble with Discovery season one digging into darker-and-edgier and ends-justify-the-means starfleet because 1: it's different characters and 2: by the time you get to the end of the season, you realize it's been an extended meditation on whether that kind of story fits Starfleet to begin with.... ...than Picard season 3 just being darker and edgier trek with the TNG cast
