I've seen massive improvements to engineering and technical departments come from (as I call it in my book) "breaking up with brains-in-jars" simplistic models, and introducing even just small, but categorically different ways of thinking about success:

- introduce a dynamic, process view into hiring and assessment and promo criteria, like "does this person change in response to feedback, did we ever see them make a mistake and show the skill of changing in response." - do a skills inventory for a role, a real one, a fresh one, not a stale one
