One thing that i've seen emulators overdo a bit is they record sounds directly from a drive and then play those back, as if you didn't have a big ass steel case muffling everything.
the effects can be really annoyingly loud as a result.
there's also the whole thing about the human ear being quite good at distinguishing the location of sounds, but unless you're pulling in some sort of 3d spatial audio library that is an effect that is very hard to replicate.
Floppy disk sounds just coming out two channel stereo speakers along with everything else will never sound quite right.
Not sure what to do about that.

I think I may be able to precalculate a spatial offset to the samples so they sound like they're coming from "below" and slightly to the right, assuming you'd be sitting at eye level with a monitor on top of the system case.
