I think I may be able to precalculate a spatial offset to the samples so they sound like they're coming from "below" and slightly to the right, assuming you'd be sitting at eye level with a monitor on top of the system case.

There's a few DAW plugins that do this sort of thing. This one was called AMBEO by Sennheiser. I'll have to play around with it.
