'Marine Memorial Day' (海の記念日 'Umi no kinenbi') was the brainchild of Communications Minister Murata Shōzō (村田省蔵). Created in 1941, the day commemorated Emperor Meiji's 1876 voyage along the north coast of Japan in the Scottish made steamship 'Meiji-maru' (明治丸)🚢

  • 20th July was chosen for 'Marine Memorial Day' as this is when the emperor finished his trip, arriving in Yokohama. Only in 1995 did the celebration become a national holiday, and in 1996 it was renamed 'Marine Day'. In 2003 the holiday was moved to the 3rd Monday in July. #Japan
