20th July was chosen for 'Marine Memorial Day' as this is when the emperor finished his trip, arriving in Yokohama. Only in 1995 did the celebration become a national holiday, and in 1996 it was renamed 'Marine Day'. In 2003 the holiday was moved to the 3rd Monday in July. #Japan
