@ilia@phpc.social Sure, there have been lots of hype cycles. I have gone through - and spoken out against - many of them myself. You may even have read some of my articles about it. This is not just another hype cycle, and it doesn't just so happen to be amplified "by social media".
The way generative AI has been marketed and propagandized is intentional, and framing it as "it's just a hype cycle amplified by social media" relieves the people behind it from responsibility, by portraying it as some natural occurrence. It is not. The people doing this have names and faces, and they know exactly what they're doing.

@joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech As I said, there is lots of money involved, so there are people with financial incentive to promote/perpetuate the hype. LLM/AIs are a tool, like most tools it is a tool with real uses and real limitations, ability to extract utility from it often depends on the operator. To dismiss the tool's utility outright, is at minimum short sighted.
