@AAKL@infosec.exchange I think both extremes play it extremely well; they find philosophical approaches that make a complex world easy to grasp and forget that the works normally contain some hefty restrictions, e.g., Marx calling for collectivism only after we became enlightened enough to share fairly. Extreme forms of Christianity, e.g., praying for a favorable outcome from a judge, are another one.

    @kdkorte@fosstodon.org Selective adaptation, like Vance reinterpreting and inventing his own version of Christianity. If you repeat the lie long enough, someone will believe you. This kind of situation is probably where the proverb "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" came from.
