I've always thought of it as a necessarily in-space story but as I think about it for the Nth time I realize that maybe it'd work just as well for a ship at sea. the time-scales are different, but setting it on a planet does tighten the narrative (nowhere to run)

this idea's been rattling around in my head for years, can't tell if now is a better or worse time to try and realize it than in the past
