this is the line of thought that leans more towards IF as a medium, because these abstract affordances can be expressed in a more predictable way. it doesn't preclude player/reader choice.
could be like a 'menu' of those sense affordances that the player/reader gets used to, and then which 'stop working' as the plot progresses.
maybe one of those affordances could be a 'cold storage' knowledge module that can be queried for information about the world that the maintenance system wouldn't need on-hand immediately, but which might be useful when entering inhabited space (for the purpose of radio comms with fleshy beings?)
and then the queries stop working, or come back garbled?
