The Swiss are a good example:
1. They think of a sensible fare between each station.
2. Then they double it.
3. Then they give 97% of Swiss citizens a national railcard that halves it back to the number they first thought of.
4. Then they have to invent a plethora of products for e.g. tourists.

Moral? Don’t hide your ‘best price’ behind railcards. Show it up front! For example, I’d abolish the Family Railcard and simply make accompanied kids free for everyone (as Germans & Austrians do).
