I just saw "move the needle" in a NYT subheader and I decided I like that phrase. It goes well with my fondness for the endless ambiguity of English which I teach very part time to people in various countries.
Slam on the gas and move that speedometer needle!
Doctor, please don't move the needle sideways when you're vaccinating me.
What kind of bastard would find the needle in the haystack and then move it somewhere else? Jeeze louise!
If you keep holding that magnet over the compass, it'll move the needle and we'll never find our way home.
I'm sure there are many more but bedtime is coming. 😇

unrelated PS: Yesterday I threw away Ollie's outdoor soft frisbee which was weeks past its "I'm a dead toy please bury me" date. This morning I took his almost new indoor frisbee and moved it into the yard. And this evening--drumroll and trumpets--I gave Ollie a brand new lime green indoor frisbee. He knows when he has a new toy, by gum--he practically dances around the house showing it off and chortling in his doggish way. Food and toys mean a lot to Ollie. ❤️
