Something Europeans don’t realize about Americans because there’s a societal disconnect: Americans aren’t stupid. They want to demonstrate that they don’t care. And the ultimate way to demonstrate that you do not care is to feign ignorance. That something is so unimportant to you that you’re oblivious towards it. That it has such little impact, it’s beyond consideration. It doesn’t matter that demonstrating ignorance makes them look stupid. What matters is that they can afford to not care. Because in the USA, apathy is a status symbol.
