@eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place I feel like this had already been happening long before generative AI. You can absolutely tell at a glance when a piece of software is built upon layers of legacy code just from using it versus software that actually had care put into it.

  • @natalie@prismst.one exactly. there's this pervasive myth that the quality of underlying code is completely hidden from users because they cannot see the actual literal code which is just such a baffling misconception of how things actually work

    @natalie@prismst.one @eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place I'm thinking there's quite a lot of truth to the fact that almost nobody cares about the code. End users tend to complain ineffectually if they notice at all. The decision makers look at the estimates and pick the cheapest and quickest. If something is cheaper to create from scratch, no matter how many security bugs it creates... There are no processes in place to associate those aspects almost anywhere I know of. Most business code is garbage nobody sane wants to maintain.
