Random brain dump. I don't know if a talking points memo went out or something, but I keep seeing the same Liberal Party argument popping up everywhere and it's freaky. "Canada accounts for less than 2% of global carbon emissions, so don't blame us for climate change." This is absolutely true. So far, we haven't had much of a direct hand in actually lighting the match that burns the boreal forests. However, set your frame around gun control. Guns don't pull their own trigger, people do. And yet while gun violence is still a thing here, it is a fact that limiting access to certain types of cheap, plentiful weapons reduces the body count. A stop-gap? Sure, but it kind of works. We are the world's 4th largest exporter of oil. Our main customer is the world's second-worst CO2 emitter - a wealthy, technologically-advanced nation that should be leading the transition but, like us, is mostly hooked on cheap, plentiful, highly-subsidized fossil energy. 1/3 #CdnPoli

While we're playing hot potato with blame for a global situation so that everybody can enjoy their inaction in peace, take a moment to think of China. China is the world's biggest CO2 emitter. A massive nation of billions and the world's largest exporter of manufactured goods. How much direct blame do they have as they make virtually everything we buy, in factories specifically built to cater to our rampant consumerism? Western countries turned China's historic poor environmental and exploitative labour policies into a global manufacturing superpower that consumes massive amounts of energy. While I find it beyond galling that USian politicians would attempt to score points with our natural forests being on fire, it's because things are not so straight-forward. None are innocent, we're all to blame. Them probably more than most, sure, owning much of the global oil industry as they do. But our policies absolutely facilitate it. We sell the cheap guns, as it were. 2/3 #CdnPoli
