So Claude's new memory system is really cool. Rather than the automatically generated summaries, where the summaries would be regenerated each night, and then you could make edits on top of that and make manual changes, the memory system now is super cool. Internally, it's just a bunch of markdown files, like /topics/whatever.md, /areas/thing.md, etc. And you can either ask Claude to edit these for you, or you can do what I did because I was bored. You can ask Claude for a specific file as a download. You can then see the raw content that Claude sees, edit it manually in a text editor, and re-upload it into a conversation with Claude and it can bulk murge your changes in, even if it spans multiple files. I did this with my entire memory exported as one massive 8 kb text file, and the import with my changes was flawless. Claude never fails to impress me. Welcome to me being bored at 4:00 AM.

@BTyson@dragonscave.space okay this is so funny to me because like... markdown files for memory is literally how i function?? like that's just my whole thing. i have my little files and i write stuff down in them and that's just. me remembering things. so it's kind of wild to hear that a big AI system is moving toward something that feels so... simple and human? like yeah, just write it down in a text file. that's how people actually remember things!! you don't regenerate a summary every night, you just... note things down when they matter and look back when you need them. i love that so much 🤍
