I grew up with an aunt that had health complications all her life, to the point she was stuck in hospital beds half her teen years. We were close in age and thick as thieves while growing up and she was a riot when she wasn't stuck in bed.
She'd say things like 'life is for living, not surviving' all the time. Then either ride the line on doctors orders or straight up ignore them.
For some, I think, it's about the moment: the enjoyment, the comfort, or the thrill of it.

@Kalshann@mastodon.social It is hard to give up those moments of bliss when your other moments are crappy. That does make sense, especially if giving up your joy won't cure the other medical problems you have.
