for that matter, other basic needs should also be free. like food and water and shelter. but gyms specifically lend themselves much easier to a library-like model of funding, because they just let you use equipment that can benefit hundreds or thousands of people, compared to food which actually has a significant cost per person and doesn't scale as easily
