A #Japanese word that makes me smile each time I come across it, is 蛍光灯 (keikoutou). It means fluorescent lamp or light.
Let's break this down into the individual characters:
* 蛍: lightning bug, firefly
* 光: ray, light
* 灯: lamp, a light
So, a fluorescent light is really a "lamp made of light by fireflies". So nice!
But it gets even better. The word also has a humorous (albeit dated) meaning:
When you use it to refer to a person, you indicate that they are a bit slow on the uptake and may take a while to understand things. That's because fluorescent lamps indeed take a while until "the light comes on". 💡
