@ascentale@sfba.social @uxMark@cosocial.ca @cainmark@mstdn.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A6: Yesterday morning and several times last year our air quality was bad due to wildfire smoke. Here it only got into the Red (150 to 200) level, and when it did I rode with a KN95 mask. We have a well filtered HVAC in our home along with an auxiliary air filter so it's never bad inside. But if outside got into the purple or maroon ranges, I'd probably not ride at all.

@ascentale@sfba.social @uxMark@cosocial.ca @cainmark@mstdn.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A6. So, just going outdoors in similar conditions (hiking), N95 mask is a MUST. You do not want to be exercising while breathing in wildfire smoke particles.. very bad for your health. The other problem (less easily solved) is smoke in your eyes, I believe a few people have mentioned that here this week. I haven't tried goggles, but I would if I had to bike in smoke particles.

@ascentale@sfba.social @uxMark@cosocial.ca @cainmark@mstdn.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6: I wore a respirator mask on the “orange skies day” in 2020 in San Francisco since I wanted to bike around town taking photos #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @uxMark@cosocial.ca @cainmark@mstdn.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6. It depends. A woman died simply stepping off a plane in Canberra, the momentarily still winds allowed the smoke from the ORRORAL fire to densely settle. Whereas the smoke from the large LONG PLAINS fire coloured the sky but was very high. The other concern is simply being caught in a fire front whilst cycling. LONG PLAINS was a grass fire pushed by huge winds, burning 120Km in about three hours. So cycling in an already smoky atmosphere means a fire can arrive without warning. This happened to a few people in the very large GOSPERS COMPLEX fire with its multiple fire fronts. The older N95 masks, with the exhaust port, look the goods for cycling in smoke. I'd suggest wearing close fit goggles rather than glasses (eg, uvex ultrasonic). When you get home change and have a shower, you don't think you stink, but you do, and moving the smoke smell from sofas and the like is a tough job. #bikenite

@ascentale@sfba.social @uxMark@cosocial.ca @cainmark@mstdn.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6. Yes to all of the masking and showering immediately advice above. If you really truly need to go out, ride slow. Slower than normal bc you won't be able to get the oxygen into your lungs at the same rate when breathing through a quality filter. Don't push yourself, try not to panic, keep it easy, and cruise whenever you can.

@ascentale@sfba.social @uxMark@cosocial.ca @cainmark@mstdn.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A6. Years ago and most years since we had really bad smoke in Seattle. Some days I just rode anyway thinking that I used to bike commute in LA with their smog and the skies looked pretty similar. The days we could see ash falling like snow, not so much. Since COVID I'm more likely to stay inside with my air filters running full blast. It also depends on how quickly I feel aggravated like being outside, walking, etc.

@ascentale@sfba.social @uxMark@cosocial.ca @cainmark@mstdn.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6. My e-bike is transportation, so my first response is "stay at home". But when I did go out I set the pedal assist to maximum and let the electricity do most of the work. I also wore a mask. #bikeTooter

@ascentale@sfba.social @uxMark@cosocial.ca @cainmark@mstdn.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A6 don't ride if you can avoid it, esp. if you'll end up somewhere near a bushfire and add to the list of people who need rescueing. If you do have to ride to go somewhere, take it easy as you'll have trouble breathing hard and seeing well - as will the drivers around you https://flic.kr/p/2sot8EL

@ascentale@sfba.social @uxMark@cosocial.ca @cainmark@mstdn.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social I did; that's when we started getting appropriate masks, which happened _before_ COVID. The company we used to buy from has shut down, but there are others. Even with a good mask I wouldn't go on a long haul in that weather tho' #BikeNite
