the "baby boom" lasted from roughly the end of WW2 in the 1940s, into the early 1960s. it happened because the entire world had been pouring all its resources into the war, and with the war over, people were excited about the future again and could afford to buy houses, raise families, etc.

    generation labels are fake and made up and divide us against each other and we should all refuse them, in general. sometimes there are genuine differences that they're shorthands for, such as having grown up in a world where housing is a pleasant dream for other people and not a realistic aspiration to base your life around, but it's extremely worth the effort to identify those assumptions and talk about them explicitly, when you want to.
