@MarkAtMicrochip@mastodon.social sorry I got sidetracked, but I think those opensource iCE40s are a pretty good common cheap FPGA that will do the trick (RV32 is extremely basic so it should fit fine)
if you want something a bit more advanced, then maybe the Digilent Nexys A7 is a good option as it's used with the official RVfpga course officially developed with RISCV international supposedly (haven't looked into but might be relevant)
you might even be able to get away with a Sipeed Tang Nano 20K for 1 core
