To be clear, however, the fact that I occasionally quote Sam Harris on these subjects and respect the fact that he does think critically about them is not an indication that I agree with him on all particulars.
Harris, in his own words, believes "gun regulation should be much stricter than it is—stricter, in fact, than anyone can reasonably hope for in the United States."
I disagree wholeheartedly with this idea.

I think firearms regulations are somewhat too onerous in some respects and in some areas of the US, and in other respects and other areas, not stringent enough. Harris also places what I think is an unwarranted emphasis on the idea of firearms training. To paraphrase another mildly problematic writer on firearms, Larry Correia, who is an actual firearms instructor—indeed, who is an instructor of firearms instructors—"training" is mostly irrelevant to firearms safety or effectiveness.
