To be a responsible, safe owner of firearms, you must commit to periodic reassessment of your own mental and emotional fitness.
A firearm is a tool which should never be fired in anger.
At the same time, it is dangerous to assume that agents of the government are ethically competent to assess the mental and emotional fitness of the people, or that they will always act with integrity when doing so.

It is ironic that so many people on the putative "left" in American society would not dream of permitting individual agents of the government the authority to enforce the law at their individual discretion in some areas, because of the dangers of undue discrimination, yet are perfectly fine with doing so when it involves this one particular basic natural right. And of course, vice versa for the putative "right" in America, the faction that wants government so small it fits in your vagina.
