All this discourse about ads on websites has me thinking, what is a sustainable way of upkeeping websites? Like maintaining the domain name registration, paying for the server space unless it's self-hosted, etc. Ads are clearly not a good solution, because they're super distracting and sometimes they promote bad things (like gambling websites) or are AI slop. But the whole model of "please donate or become a patron if you like this website" might not be sustainable if there aren't many interested folks, either. Some people pay out of pocket to maintain the site, which not every website admin can afford to do.
