Weird to say this but Linden Lab cracked the code for making 3d modeling economically worthwhile decades ago and better than any of the modern 3d printing sites have yet to do. First they had an almost airtight ecosystem, and then they coined their own currency that can be exchanged for real money. Still to this day one of the strongest communities on the entire Internet.

    I kind of left out a crucial part: true micro transactions. Instead of paying $5 for a model you could pay 5 cents. Which honestly is about what people are willing to pay for virtual goods (on the regular). Kids and the clueless pay real money for virtual goods obviously, but Second Life has always had a more sophisticated and technologically educated general population.
