🙏CHIGO-MOCHI🎭
Originally made by Nakamura-rō (中村楼), a teahouse in the grounds of Yasaka-jinja, 'chigo-mochi' (稚児餅) was served to the festival's pages (稚児 'chigo') when they came to pray at the shrine on July 13th. The sweet was thought to offer sacred protection.

Nowadays produced all year round by Sanjō Wakasa-ya (三條若狭屋), the sweet remains a festival favourite. Such was its importance to the city, that it was 1 of only 18 types of wagashi that were permitted to be made through WWII rationing (even when the festival was cancelled).
