Nowadays produced all year round by Sanjō Wakasa-ya (三條若狭屋), the sweet remains a festival favourite.
Such was its importance to the city, that it was 1 of only 18 types of wagashi that were permitted to be made through WWII rationing (even when the festival was cancelled).

Chigo-mochi (稚児餅) is a skewered rice cake with a sweet and slightly salty miso filling. It's finished with a sparkling coat of 'koori mochi' (氷餅 - freeze dried mochi). The icy appearance and hint of salt make this a perfect snack for combating the relentless Kyōto heat.
