True. It would be worse during daylight hours. But there's still the hotels, motels, hostels and campervans to think about.
I read a long form piece last year (Newsroom?) about the problems of evacuating this area during a disaster. I'll have a search for it tomorrow, but the gist was a tsunami would be the worst case in terms of evacuations.

The tsunami warning has been downgraded and the big quakes revised to a 5.9. But there will still be high tides a swells. "... stay away from the sea, beaches, harbours, marinas, rivers and estuaries. "People on boats, live-aboards and at marinas should leave their boats/vessels and move onto shore.
