As news of the cancellation spread, huge protests against the Ashikaga Shōgunate began. People argued that they would gladly do without the religious ceremonies (banned by the shōgunate), but would not forego the parade.
2 months late, the Yamaboko Junkō (山鉾巡行) went ahead🙌

As a result of Ashikaga Yoshiharu’s clamp-down on public religious celebrations, many of the Gion Matsuri's ancient religious rituals were forever cast aside. In its place the festival grew into the more familiar float-focused, carnival-like form we know today. #祇園祭 #京都
