As a result of Ashikaga Yoshiharu’s clamp-down on public religious celebrations, many of the Gion Matsuri's ancient religious rituals were forever cast aside.
In its place the festival grew into the more familiar float-focused, carnival-like form we know today.

The authority and power the float neighbourhoods wielded can be seen with their defeat of the formidable Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉). He wished to restructure the roads and blocks of the city (as at Gojō Bridge), but they vociferously refused and in the end he simply gave up!
