The authority and power the float neighbourhoods wielded can be seen with their defeat of the formidable Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉). He wished to restructure the roads and blocks of the city (as at Gojō Bridge), but they vociferously refused and in the end he simply gave up!

  • Between the Momoyama and Edo periods trade flourished along the Silk Road (シルクロード). Kyōto's Muromachi district (室町-home of the yamaboko 山鉾) was considered the eastern most point of this thriving route. Many precious imported textiles became decorations for the floats.
