Between the Momoyama and Edo periods trade flourished along the Silk Road (シルクロード).
Kyōto's Muromachi district (室町-home of the yamaboko 山鉾) was considered the eastern most point of this thriving route. Many precious imported textiles became decorations for the floats.

Textile merchants became spectacularly wealthy from trade with the mainland, enabling them to purchase ever more lavish and unusual pieces. Edo times were mostly peaceful and very little about the festival changed, though armour and weapons were now banned during the parade.
