The movie seems to have gotten a mixed reception, and I think understandably so - you really have to come into it with the understanding that this is a movie about colonialism. It's not really a traditional adventure movie or anything of that sort; there's no real triumph to it. It's about normal, impoverished people doing their best to survive in a world that exists to exploit them for the benefit of their betters.

There's a lot of little touches that really add to it and legitimize its critique of colonialism - at one point, two of the main characters meet a human driver for the aliens. He explains that he's completely unnecessary, but the aliens keep him around because it's the native culture, and so it's stylish. He used to be a neurosurgeon, but being a trophy driver for these aliens pays five times as much as he ever got doing actual useful work.
