“I recently read Eric Raymond’s The Cathedral and the Bazaar. It was oddly sad to read. The enthusiasm and optimistic view of open source and the future of software and craftsmanship. Looking at it in 2026… incredibly sad.
“Forget the bazaar. Back to the cathedral.”

One of the great transformations in the first half of my career was the switch from paid tools to free tools. I worked in a computer store that sold software on diskettes in boxes. We had an entire section for programming tools like compilers, profilers, and debuggers. I paid for Metrowerks CodeWarrior and Lightspeed/Think C. Freedom from pay-to-program was glorious. But capitalism has stolen that back with AI... And switched from buy-to-own to consumption-pricing! That. Sucks. 2/2
