One of the great transformations in the first half of my career was the switch from paid tools to free tools. I worked in a computer store that sold software on diskettes in boxes. We had an entire section for programming tools like compilers, profilers, and debuggers. I paid for Metrowerks CodeWarrior and Lightspeed/Think C. Freedom from pay-to-program was glorious. But capitalism has stolen that back with AI... And switched from buy-to-own to consumption-pricing! That. Sucks. 2/2
