Originally, although floats would parade through the city on the same day, in the early years there is no evidence of an actual organised 'procession'. This came later. As the wealth of Kyōto's textile merchants skyrocketed, so did the race to produce the finest float. #山鉾

  • Initially 66 'machi-gumi' (町組 'town associations') managed the floats. These self-autonomous neighbourhoods were collectively known as 'shimobe/shimohe' (下辺 lit. 'the lower area'), as they were clustered in the southern portion of the city centre ('Shimo-gyō' 下京). #祇園祭
