Initially 66 'machi-gumi' (町組 'town associations') managed the floats. These self-autonomous neighbourhoods were collectively known as 'shimobe/shimohe' (下辺 lit. 'the lower area'), as they were clustered in the southern portion of the city centre ('Shimo-gyō' 下京). #祇園祭

  • 7 major guilds, called 'za' (座), paid an annual fee to the Gion-sha (祇園社 - Yasaka-jinja) for control of the yamaboko. These 'donations' were an important source of income for the shrine, which -in part thanks to the festival- had become one of the city's most important.
