7 major guilds, called 'za' (座), paid an annual fee to the Gion-sha (祇園社 - Yasaka-jinja) for control of the yamaboko. These 'donations' were an important source of income for the shrine, which -in part thanks to the festival- had become one of the city's most important.

  • Centred on the Muromachi district (室町), each of the float associations within the neighbourhoods established different traditions around each of their increasingly elaborate and unique yamaboko (山鉾). The feeling of competition between communities became palpable. #GionMatsuri
