Centred on the Muromachi district (室町), each of the float associations within the neighbourhoods established different traditions around each of their increasingly elaborate and unique yamaboko (山鉾).
The feeling of competition between communities became palpable.

In 1415 the first Yamaboko Junkō 'procession' (山鉾巡行) is recorded, entertaining the gods of Gion as they entered the city. A second parade soon marked their departure. It is thought that prior to the Ōnin War (応仁の乱) there were between 58-60 floats (half for each parade).
