In 1415 the first Yamaboko Junkō 'procession' (山鉾巡行) is recorded, entertaining the gods of Gion as they entered the city.
A second parade soon marked their departure.
It is thought that prior to the Ōnin War (応仁の乱) there were between 58-60 floats (half for each parade).

Most of the city, including the Gion-sha, was at one time or another razed during The Ōnin War (応仁の乱 1467-77). Merchant wealth enabled the festival to reestablish itself (with 36 of the 60ish floats) around 1500, and since this time it has remained mostly uninterrupted. #京都
