Most of the city, including the Gion-sha, was at one time or another razed during The Ōnin War (応仁の乱 1467-77). Merchant wealth enabled the festival to reestablish itself (with 36 of the 60ish floats) around 1500, and since this time it has remained mostly uninterrupted. #京都

  • Such was the fabulous wealth of the the machi-gumi (町組), and their drive to outdo their neighbours, that the government grew concerned about civic order. From 1500 the float order of the Yamaboko Junkō was decided by lottery (くじ取り式 'kujitori-shiki') to prevent fighting.
