Such was the fabulous wealth of the the machi-gumi (町組), and their drive to outdo their neighbours, that the government grew concerned about civic order.
From 1500 the float order of the Yamaboko Junkō was decided by lottery (くじ取り式 'kujitori-shiki') to prevent fighting.

🤔On a side note, one of the reasons so much money was poured into the floats was as a means of social subversion. The government strictly limited displays of wealth (such as clothing and housing) depending on social class, but such rules did not extend to the floats😉 #Kyoto
