Kyōto in the early 16thC was filled with violence between Buddhist religious sects. In 1533 Ashikaga Yoshiharu (足利義晴), in an attempt to diffuse the religious-fueled civil disorder within the city, halted all religious events, including the Gion Festival (祇園祭)😲

As news of the cancellation spread, huge protests against the Ashikaga Shōgunate began. People argued that they would gladly do without the religious ceremonies (banned by the shōgunate), but would not forego the parade. 2 months late, the Yamaboko Junkō (山鉾巡行) went ahead🙌
